Disappointment nationally but success locally

Just about everyone was disappointed with the national results with no party gaining an overall majority. The onus is now on the two of the three party leaders to come up with a workable solution. This gives the Lib Dems an historic opportunity to influence government policy at the highest level. Now’s the time that Nick Clegg will really earn whatever it is he’s being paid!

Locally though it was different. Jonathan Chatfield did not win the SE Cambs seat but he did increase his vote by about 6% with a swing from the Tories to us of about 2.5%. Well done Jonathan! Sebastian Kindersley recorded an almost identical result in S Cambs. And of course Julian Huppert held the Cambridge City seat.

In the district council election Edd won!  The result was:

Candidate Political Party Votes cast Elected?
Neil Sinnett Davies Independent 1462 No
Valerie Sybil Fryer UK Independence Party 176 No
Philip Scott The Conservative Party 1189 No
Edward William Stonham Liberal Democrat 1775 Yes
Niamh Marian Sweeney The Labour Party 561 No

There was an amazing 82.5% turnout.

Edd said: ‘This is truly amazing. I am new to this game and I learnt so much from Jonathan Chatfield and his team during the campaign. On election day itself I was still ‘knocking up’ well into the evening.’

‘I know that my real challenge now starts. I am taking over from a councillor with quite a reputation and I need to do at least as well. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on Histon Parish Council and to supporting Impington Parish and Orchard Park Community Councils. I am also excited about the prospects of working in the local Lib Dem team with our 2 county councillors and with Jonathan Chatfield who is one of the other district councillors.’

Successful day for the new playgound

It was a typical bank holiday Monday. Some sunshine, frequent and sometimes heavy showers and rather windy. And it was also pretty cold at times. But it was the day for the soft opening of the new playground at the Rec and many children came along to test it. Continue reading

We found our boards!

Edd met a local resident at church on Sunday who told him where our boards had been dumped. It wasn’t too far away but retrieving them was quite a challenge. Continue reading

An active campaigning day in Histon and Impington

It was another full day of campaigning on Saturday across the country and Histon and Impington was no exception.  It started at 9am outside Tesco in Histon. Continue reading

Someone’s nicked our boards!

We’ve been quite excited during this campaign about the number of people who’ve volunteered to help, to put posters in their windows and stakeboards in their gardens. Then last night someone nicked 8 of our stakeboards along Park Lane and Impington Lane. We understand that the Tories have lost some of theirs as well. Continue reading

More waste at South Cambs

Following the retirement of Chief Executive Greg Harlock Tory councillors at South Cambs have approved a pay package to attract a new CEO and have decided to spend £50K on head hunters to find one. Continue reading

Still no news about the Guided Bus

You couldn’t call it a case if ‘no news is good news’ but when the Tory Cabinet at Cambridgeshire County Council met yesterday to discuss the Guided Bus situation the press and public were excluded. So whatever might have been discussed is not for communication. Continue reading

Good news for local residents

Residents along Cottenham Road and Water Lane have lots to complain about because these roads are also the B1049 and is far too popular with HCVs. It’s bad enough in the daytime but night time it gets even worse and ruins many a night’s sleep. Continue reading

More silly expenditure at South Cambs

South Cambs has announced that it will be replacing the green boxes used for kerb-side recycling of newspapers etc by blue bins. This will cost about £1.5 million. Continue reading
